17 Aug 2010 Snowing in August Greeting Cards
 |  Category: Featured Post, Shop News  | Leave a Comment

Thought you might like to see what was created at our last greeting card workshop!    We called it the “Over Achiever’s Snowman”.  Since the cards were made in August they were melted before the holiday actually arrived!

Here is the outer card created to hold the melted snowmen.

Inside the snowman pieces were in a baggie.   A backing card made for him embossed with snowflakes in light blue.   The snowman’s scarf coordinated with the ribbon on the outer card.

I really enjoy having the class participate and offer their own ideas in addition the techniques they learn!!

And these still mailed at the standard 1st class postage rate!!!

30 Jul 2010 Bee Newsflash….
 |  Category: Featured Post  | Leave a Comment

The hive at Jersey Made has been doing great!   Just a few weeks ago the beekeeper Michael Long of Uriah Creek Apiaries reported that the “bees are banging and doing great”.

So I was surprised yesterday when my neighbor came to let me know that something was going on with the bees and they appeared to be swarming.    We called Michael and he came right away to check out the situation.  He reported that the Queen had followed the swarm out from the hive.   The large group of bees we saw were heading off to a new location.    There are 4 new pods inside the hive where new Queens are growing.   The hive is exceeding all of our expectations and that is a great thing!!!

Why?   The answer is simple.   There is so much ‘food supply’ around the area that the bees are flourishing.

The pumpkin patch is doing great!

This could be the hugest sunflower I have ever seen.     Joe is holding up a quarter while standing on a chair so that I could get this photograph!!

And the Angel Trumpets….   I know I blogged about these last week but it really is quite a spectacular experience.        Somehow the bees know to arrive about 10 minutes before these flower begin to open at approximately 8:05PM.    They are buzzing all around just waiting!

The cucumber plant that is growing into the old tree stump.

There are 4 watermelons on this vine.

All kinds of tomatoes are growing.   Had some tonight that Joe grilled along with some eggplant and squash – totally yummy!!

There are 4 green peppers on just one plant!

A group of us sat fascinated as we watched the Angel Trumpets open up.    But the really cool part for me was watching the activity of the bees.    They were gathering the pollen from inside the flowers and then flying back to the hive with their bounty.   They had so much pollen it almost seemed like they were flying vertically  LOL!

Best wishes to the Queen and her followers.

The hive will continue on and create more honey in Mount Holly!!

And kudos to master gardener Joe for creating such an awesome garden from seeds and gathered objects to make beds for them!    Very impressive!

27 Jul 2010 Salute Burlco Troops
 |  Category: Featured Post, Uncategorized  | Leave a Comment

I recently attended a meeting of the Salute Burlco Troops.   The work being done by this group is quite impressive!!

In conjunction with American Legion Post #11 they have put together a fundraiser on August 29th at Dempster’s Pub in Mount Holly.    More info on their website or the Jersey Made Facebook page.

Salute Burlco Troops is a non-profit organization.   One of the ways they use the funds is to host Welcome Home Events for soldiers coming back from deployment.   They also have a program where they send men and women currently serving overseas care packages.    The mission is to enhance the quality of life to the soldier serving in Iraq/Afghanistan by sending “The Comforts of Home”.   They send boxes of items directly to soldiers or units.   All of the packing is done on a volunteer basis.

So I got thinking about what I would do without some of the things on this list.  It really struck home for me that it must be extra challenging when you do not have “The Comforts of Home”.    This is a local group supporting our own soldiers while they are serving our county.

I have volunteered to have a collection box at Jersey Made for any donated items that can be included in these packages from home.   Please print out this list or jot down a few things that you couldn’t live without for 30 days and take it with you while shopping.   Perhaps pick up an item or more to bring with you next time you stop in Jersey Made.

deodorant (stick or roll-0n), lip balm, sunscreen lotion, toothbrushes/toothpaste, dental floss, mouthwash, baby powder, shower to shower (removes sand), Gold Bond foot powder, body wash, loofahs, soap bars, body lotion, hand lotion, antibacterial wipes (small packs), hand sanitizer, disposable razors (men/women), shaving cream (no aerosol), shampoo, conditioner, flip flops (to protect feet), Visine or Saline eye drops, toilet paper, Kleenex, insect repellent, fly paper strips, and fly swatters (they mentioned this one at the meeting and said this was something the soldiers asked if we could help!), cookies, crackers, ramon noodles, chewing gum, licorice, breath mints, tootsie rolls, dry roasted peanuts/mixed nuts,  Pringles chip (in the can), dried fruit, sunflower seeds, slim jims, beef jerky, popcorn (microwave), Country Time, Snapple, Crystal Light, Cparisun energy drinks (singles to go)

Please no aerosols!

Tickets for the August 29th event will also be available at Jersey Made.

It’s something little that we can all do but I am sure it makes a big difference to the soldiers serving our country away from home!!

22 Jul 2010 Angel Trumpets
 |  Category: Shop News  | One Comment

Tonight I saw something I have never seen before.    My neighbors have all been talking about it but I am usually not around at 8pm when this happens.   Debi & I were at Jersey Made late for an Altered Book class.    Joe came to get me at 7:55pm to let me know that in 5 minutes it would start.

So Debi & I raced outside – searching quickly for our cameras…..

This is what we saw when we first got out there.   The Angel Trumpet plant with many blooms ready to burst open.   The big tall bean stalk in the back is actually a giant sunflower – that was impressive too!!

Somehow the bees knew that the flowers were about to open.   They were all buzzing around.

While we waited I took a photo of my neighbor, Ashley.    These are corn plants that have been nurtured by Joe (master gardener and a super nice guy) from the corn seeds that Ashley brought from Indiana.    All this from just 3 seeds!!!   The seeds from this crop will grow into a larger crop next year.

And this is a pumpkin patch!!    Joe used the bales of hay method to plant some things but the pumpkins took over!!    There are 3 huge pumpkins getting ready for fall.    Nope – they are not turning orange yet!!

Then back to the transformation.    The Angel Trumpets would shake.   Joe explained that it was the water inside of them that would cause them to unfurl.   Can you see the star????

It was really an incredible sight!!!

The lovely scent that came from the Angel Trumpets filled the air when all the blooms were finally open.   There were 16 in all – a record number in one evening according to Joe.   He felt that the recent rain had increased the number.

Each bloom gets one evening!

The wonders of nature continue to inspire and amaze me!!!   The crowd that gathered around the Angel Trumpets were all quite impressed – even those who had seen this magical event before.

Just wanted to share some of that inspiration with you!

02 Jul 2010 A writing connection…
 |  Category: Featured Post  | Leave a Comment

Jersey Made is pleased to welcome artist, Lee Bennett.  I was totally impressed with her little journal books.    For many years I have been carrying a journal with me 100% of the time.   Notes, sketches, to-do lists, and contact information all gather there in my travels.   Lee creates many sizes of note books, journals, scrapbooks and greeting cards – each unique in its own way and 100% handmade!!

I asked Lee to tell us about herself and her inspirations…

“Read Write Books is a passionate creation of mine. I received my BA in both Graphic Design and Art History from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. I have a passion for paper, ink, and communication. Through books; new, old, and handmade; I experience a personal connection with humanity that is often lost in an electronic world. Books record history not only with words, but with scents, marginalia, wear, and cover-page inscriptions. I hope my creations can offer the beginning of a connection for you or someone you know, whether it is a connection to someone else or a deeper connection with oneself.”   Lee Bennett

Summer is a great time to start a new journal about your warmer temperature adventures.   Stop by to see Lee’s creations!

 |  Category: Featured Post  | Leave a Comment

A few months ago I posted about the bracelets that I was having made for my sisters from my Nana & Grammie’s silverware collection.

Click here if you would like to go back…..    Wearing an Heirloom – part 1

Since our birthdays are just 2 weeks apart, Heidi and I share our family birthday party.    So it was fun yesterday to present her with a bracelet made with our family heirlooms.

She loved it!!

Linda from Silver Wear Cutlery Creations does a wonderful job and her bracelets, key chains, pendants and wind chimes are beautiful.   Her Meet the Artist event was so well received there are plans to have Linda come again to take custom orders.   So find your silver wear that has been stashed in the attic and keep watching the website for more information….

Thanks Linda for bringing many smiles to my family!!
